{"id":9128,"date":"2022-11-05T15:55:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-05T15:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aliviodownsizing.com\/?p=9128"},"modified":"2023-05-17T15:01:41","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T15:01:41","slug":"how-to-have-a-smooth-transition-into-a-retirement-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aliviodownsizing.com\/en\/how-to-have-a-smooth-transition-into-a-retirement-community\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Have a Smooth Transition into a Retirement Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong><span class=\"arck-font-size\">The move from living at home to living in a Retirement Community is a big step for everyone involved.\u00a0 Undoubtedly, it will be a change for family members and friends.\u00a0 However, it is important to remember one thing.\u00a0The person who will be experiencing the\u00a0<em>most<\/em>\u00a0change will be the loved one uprooting all that they know.\u00a0 The following are a few tips on how to have a smooth transition to a Retirement Community.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Ask Questions<\/h2>\n<p>Before moving into a Retirement Community, it is important to be prepared for all of the changes that are about to occur.\u00a0 Whether you\u2019re doing some research online or about to visit a facility, it would be a good idea to write down any questions you have.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, an information booklet will be provided to each resident and\/or family.\u00a0 While these booklets aim to answer all possible questions, it\u2019s likely something has been missed or requires clarification.\u00a0 A tour of the facilities is also usually provided, which offers another opportunity to write down notes and questions as they arise.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>A few questions you may want to ask, include:<\/h3>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>What stage of life does the facility cater to?<\/li>\n<li>Are the living arrangements categorized as apartments, assisted living, nursing homes, medical housing, or other?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a waiting list or is placement guaranteed instantly?<\/li>\n<li>Are there private room, are there shared room to save costs?<\/li>\n<li>How will the finances be taken care of?\u00a0 Automatic withdrawal, post-dated cheques, or other options?<\/li>\n<li>What is included in the facility itself?\u00a0 For example, check if there is someone on staff for:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Hairdressing<\/li>\n<li>Nail Care<\/li>\n<li>Dental Care<\/li>\n<li>Social Activities<\/li>\n<li>On-call nurse\/doctor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Is someone available to accompany the resident to appointments outside of the facility?<\/li>\n<li>Will a bed be provided or will the resident need to bring their own?\u00a0 What about other furniture such as bureaus, night tables, etc.?<\/li>\n<li>Are items allowed to be hung on the walls?<\/li>\n<li>What are they allowed\/not allowed to bring with them into the facility?<\/li>\n<li>Does clothing need to be labeled?\u00a0 If so, how?\u00a0 What is the laundry schedule?\u00a0 Who takes care of the laundry?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Are there kitchenettes in each room?<\/li>\n<li>Are pets allowed? What are the restrictions? Are there exceptions?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The more information you have from the beginning, the less you\u2019ll need to worry later on.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Understand That Routines Will Change<\/h2>\n<p>It is difficult for anyone to suddenly change their day-to-day routine.\u00a0 When you\u2019ve grown accustomed to doing things a certain way for the majority of your life, change can feel overwhelming.\u00a0 So much so, that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seniornews.com\/relocation-stress-syndrome-impacts-elderly\/\"><u>Relocation Stress Syndrome<\/u><\/a>, also known as \u201ctransfer trauma\u201d, is caused by a change in a home environment.<\/p>\n<p>Those working in the Retirement Community understand this and are there to provide support.\u00a0 However, some things can be done before, during, and afterthe move to help ease the process.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0This includes:<\/h3>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Ask for the itinerary of the home.\u00a0 In the days or weeks leading up to the transition, follow their daily schedule ie: dining time.<\/li>\n<li>Remind the individual that they have your support.\u00a0 If they\u2019re feeling anxious, ask them what can be done to ease their mind.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever possible, include them in the planning stages leading up to the move.\u00a0 This way, they won\u2019t feel blindsided when the time comes.\u00a0 This is especially true for those who have always been highly independent; accepting the fact that they may need help is not easy.<\/li>\n<li>Have friends or family plan visits in advance and make sure they stick to what they say.\u00a0 Of course, emergencies may arise which may affect visits.\u00a0 Otherwise, if someone says they will be there, hold them to their word.\u00a0 Not only will this provide something for them to look forward to, but it also proves that all you promised before they joined the facility remains true.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to ask how they are doing even weeks and months into their stay.\u00a0 Even one slight change can affect how they are responding to life in their new environment.\u00a0 From a staff change to a new meal being added to the menu, simply show interest in their life. The fact that you know when something may be affecting how they\u2019re feeling, alone, is incredibly important.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These are only a few ways to make the transition easier, and it\u2019s important to keep in mind that everyone\u2019s needs are different.\u00a0 Be prepared to handle unexpected situations and take them one step at a time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Moving From Home to A New Community<\/h2>\n<p>Moves are always difficult, even for someone who&#8217;s moved several times but especially for those who have been in the same home for several decades.
